Notes from Spring Training

Here is a little progress report on how some of the young guys (or old in the case of Remlinger) are doing this spring.

Anthony Lerew- Looked fantastic in his first outing, but he gave up four runs (one earned) in his most previous outing. Granted, three of the runs were unearned, but it was Lerew's throwing error that lead to the runs. Also, the runs scored on a string of two out hits. I still am optimistic that he will make the team.

Chuck James- Has looked solid if not spectacular. Threw a couple of good innings today.

Brad Baker- Looked ok until he got lit up today to the tune of six runs in two innings. His chances of making the team are slipping fast.

Mike Remlinger- Threw a scoreless inning in his second outing after getting touched for four runs in his first outing. He still needs to show something to make the team.

John Foster- Also got lit up today. Hopefully he will not make the team.

James Jurries- As hot as anybody on the team this spring. He is making a strong push to platoon with Laroche at first base. The problem is Matt Diaz is out of options which would push Kelly Johnson to AAA should Jurries make the team. Another problem is Scott Thorman is slated to start at first base for Richmond, so sending Jurries down would cause a conflict there as well.

Matt Diaz- Hitting the ball very well but misplayed a flyball in left field leaving questions about his fielding ability. As I mentioned above, he is out of options so he is either making the team or being put on waivers.

Wilson Betemit- He is also hitting the ball very well this spring. He will be a great asset should an injury occur anywhere in the infield.

Jarrod Saltalamacchia- Hit a game winning three run homer already this spring. Looks like he should be in the majors sooner rather than later.
